Each natural fiber has its own characteristic texture, color, weave, and structure—from the fine, refined weave of toquilla to the rustic texture of seagrass and the lightweight structure of sinamay.
You'll recognize these beautiful hats for their yellow, green, and brown hues obtained from their natural coastal environment. Loosely woven seagrass hats are breezy and lightweight. More delicate than other natural straw hats, so give them a little extra care and always hold them by the brim, as constant pinching of the crown can break the grass strands.
Hemp is one of the oldest plants spun into usable fiber. Hemp fibers are made into linen-like textiles. Though some hemp hats have a bit of a crude, burlap-like look, as if holding onto their ancient legacy.
Fine sinamay fibers are obtained from Abaca leaf stalks. The fibers are made into a loosely woven sheet. The hats and fascinators are blocked and stiffened to their final shape. Lightweight, delicate hats are perfect for special occasions.
The famous Ecuadorian Panama hats are made of Toquilla palm straw. The fibers are sorted based on thickness, evenness, color, and texture, then handwoven into a cone-like hood shape and blocked into the desired style. The best quality Montecristi Panama hats are woven only by master weavers.
Wheat straw is a thick and coarse straw with a beautiful golden tone. The wheat fibers are plaited into a braid and sewn.
The fibers are produced from the sisal plant by beating and crushing the leaves. The finer grades are used for hat making.
Jute straw is made from the stem and skin of jute plants. Strong and breathable.
