Toyo straw is made of rice paper. When woven into smooth sheets, and pressed into a hat shape, then finished and glazed, toyo hats look like Toquilla palm panama hats. When toyo yarn is crocheted, they mimic a crocheted raffia straw hat. Woven toyo yarn can be braided and woven into strands, just like raffia.
